Traditional Worship Music

The Chancel Choir
Worship, from the vantage
point of the Chancel Choir

Our Music Staff consists of Kathleen Otterson, Director of Music; John A. Rafoth, Organist; and current Section Leader / Soloist Quartet members: Lyssandra Walsh, Kathleen Buttita, James Kryshak and John Bohman. Many volunteers also serve the Christ Church music programs in various ways, and all are much appreciated!

The Chancel Choir includes 25-30 dedicated volunteer singers, in addition to the section leaders. The choir rehearses each Thursday evening from September through May and provides music for worship each week at the 9:00 a.m. service. During the summer months, Thursday rehearsals are suspended and the choir meets on Sunday morning to prepare music for the worship service. Singers of all ages are welcome – no audition required!

Organist John Rafoth celebrates over 40 years as organist at Christ Church, providing music for Sunday services, weddings, memorial services and other church events, and accompanying the Chancel Choir and soloists each week. John’s care and concern for quality in worship is evident in the beauty and artistry of the music he chooses and presents. How fortunate Christ Church is to have such a dedicated worship leader!

The Celebration Ringers Handbell Choir flourishes under the leadership of John Bohman.  The ongoing participation of several “core members” allows the ebb and flow of college-age ringers, creating a stability that enables the group to present repertoire of an ever-increasing level of difficulty with great artistry. The ensemble rehearses weekly and provides special music in worship about once a month.

in Sunday music activities.

The children of Christ Church have weekly opportunities to learn about music and specifically the music of the church, through participation in the Faith Quest Sunday School program.  All children sing together during the Faith Quest gathering time, and “Rhythm and Tunes” is a part of the rotation each month. The children sing in worship at various times during the church year, and work together to present musical dramas and a bi-annual Christmas pageant.

The Lenten and Advent Vespers (evening) services feature music provided by church staff and other volunteers. Twenty minutes of “Music for Meditation” precede each Chapel service.

Thanks be to God for the gift of music and for all who love and cherish it at Christ Church!
